Floor plans for the Colonial home are simple asymmetrical rectangular shaped that are generally two stories. The entryway of the home is usually enhanced with attractive trim and supporting columns that bear a large overhang or sometimes a porch.

Traditional Colonial homes are well liked mostly in the eastern part of the US, mainly the Northeast where early colonialists first settled. The Colonial house can also be found in the southern United States where they are basically the same. They are however, accented with characteristics of the southern house style and are referred to as Southern Colonial, sometimes, “Plantation”, given that some of the more elaborate ones where owned by wealthy plantation owners.
