The Colonial Revival House Style

After the US Centennial Exposition, the Colonial Revival became the home-style choice around the mid 1870’s. The Colonial Revival mirrored true American patriotism and a yearning for simplicity in floor plan layout as well as appearance, this Colonial house style stayed popular until the mid-1950's. The Colonial Revival was the most popular home-style choice being built in America between both World Wars.

Some still say that Colonial Revival is simple Victorian style; while others have determined that the Colonial Revival style was the end of the Victorian home-style era in American architecture. The Colonial Revival depicts slight characteristics of the Federal and Georgian house styles, and a reasonable retort against greatly elaborate Victorian or Queen Anne architecture. Finally, the simplistic Colonial Revival style was integrated into the and smaller Bungalow house styles of the early 20th century.

Ultimately, when searching for Colonial house plans, the Colonial home style is where you will find all of these great and unique home styles. Some Colonial house plans will be straightforward where the Colonial style is evident others will have variations of Spanish, or Saltbox style.
